Scope of work

Clough Niugini was contracted by Chevron Niugini Pty. Ltd. to recover, stabilise, design, and complete the damaged and partially submerged Mubi River Bridge in the Southern Highlands Province, Papua New Guinea. The collapsed bridge was part of a major road infrastructure project, which spanned 115 kilometres and included a total of nine bridges; the largest of which was the 200 tonnne, 80-metre single-span Warren truss bridge crossing the Mubi River.

The bridge had fallen during the initial launching, requiring Clough Niugini to re-erect the launch noise of the fallen bridge from its position between the bridge adutments, repair damage, and design, construct and complete the remainder of the bridge. The design team, procurment personnel, fabrication and project teams worked closely to ensure the tight deadline of completion was met.

The specially formed project team, made up of Clough's Australian personnel and highly-skilled workforce in PNG achieved project completion in under four months, showcasing outstanding innovative engineering, design and construction feats in the face of a complex and high risk challenge, in a remote location in PNG. The project was completed with zero recordable injuries, on time and on budget.
