In 1919, a humble building company called Clough Brothers is formed in Perth, Western Australia, named after its two founders, brothers, John (more popularly known as Jack) and Bill Clough.  

Harold Clough is born in Perth, Western Australia. Harold later went on to join the Clough business, where he remained for 49 years, retiring as Managing Director. 

Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, Clough employs its own carpenters, bricklayers and plasterers rather than subcontracting them. The real challenge began soon after; to find new projects to keep its expanded workforce.  

Harold Clough joins his father's business when National Mutual agrees to award Clough Brothers a contract on the provision that Harold worked full-time on it.

J.O. Clough & Son was awarded their first major project the National Mutual Building. This building was Perth's first high-rise and major project after WW2.

The Department of Main Roads invites tenders for the Narrows Bridge in Perth, Western Australia and Clough is awarded its first major civil project. 

At £1.5 million, it is by far the largest project J O Clough had taken on, involving a completely new construction method and opened on 13 November 1959.   

The Harbourworks Clough Joint Venture is formed (known as BAM Clough) in 1964. Not long after, it is awarded the materials-handling facility for Hamersley Iron in Parker Point, Western Australia. 

Clough's first oil and gas project is at Barrow Island for West Australian Petroleum in 1967, involving the design and construction of a 10km-long, 508mm submarine pipeline and marine terminal.   

Clough embarks on a joint venture with Abudl Muiz in Indonesia and later is awarded the contract to build the main highway from Medan to Sumarta. This signifies Clough's expansion into international territory.  

Clough's first major community focus began with the establishment of the Clough Scholars program. Scholarships are awarded to students undertaking full-time engineering study.  

Clough expands its operations to Brisbane, Queensland, and begins to secure projects on the East Coast of Australia.

The early 1980s marks an important milestone with the first project for Woodside, North Rankin A. The $150 million project is the company’s entry into offshore petrochemical and gas and oil processing work. 

Clough expands into other Asian countries via the acquisition of Petrosea, an Indonesian-based engineering company operating in Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia and Hong Kong 

Clough is established in Papua New Guinea to service the region’s energy, mining and infrastructure markets.  

Harold Clough retires as Managing Director of Clough Engineering, remaining a director and Chairman of Clough Limited, and is succeeded by Peter Knight. Albert Scott becomes Chairman of Clough Engineering.  

Clough finds success with the award of several contracts in PNG. Through the 1990s Clough is working on some of PNG’s biggest resources projects. 

The decision is made to float Petrosea, which is capitalised at $92 million, making Clough’s shares worth $42.5 million, its single biggest asset and valued at more than its Australian operations. 

WA's first major underground tunnel and largest in Australia at the time. It is one of the most challenging road construction ventures undertaken in the State. 

Clough lists on the ASX in March 1998 with a share price of 71 cents per share. At the time of public listing, Clough had a team of over 800 professionals and employed over 4,000 people worldwide.  

Woodside awards the EPCM services for the North West Shelf Train IV expansion to the Kellogg JV (Clough, KBR, JGC and Hatch). 

Harold Clough steps down as Chairman and becomes a non-executive director, 53 years after he joined with his father.  

Clough AMEC is established and five months later is awarded the ConocoPhillips Bayu-Undan Operations and Maintenance contract. 

Shareholders agree to back a deal where the Clough family ceded control within four years to Murray & Roberts, which acquired 120 million shares to lift its stake from 4.9 to 29.3 per cent. 

Woodside awards the Train V Jetty project to Clough for construction of a 150-metre-long jetty extension to Woodside Energy’s existing LNG export marine terminal, near Dampier, Western Australia.  

Clough as part of the Kellogg Joint Venture is awarded the EPCM contract for all downstream facilities for Australia's largest ever resource project, The Gorgon Project on Barrow Island, Western Australia. 

Clough secures two of its largest ever contracts; the Upstream Infrastructure scope and the EPC contract to build the Hides Gas Conditioning Plant for ExxonMobil's PNG LNG project.

Clough is awarded a third contact for ExxonMobil's PNG LNG Project, construction of the LNG and condensate jetty. 

Chevron awards Clough the Wheatstone Hook-up and Commissioning Contract for one of Australia’s largest offshore facilities with a topsides weight of about 37,000 tonnes. 

Clough acquires e2o, completions, commissioning and operational support company based in Adelaide. 

On 12 December 2013, Clough is delisted from the ASX to become a fully-owned subsidiary of Murray & Roberts. 

Clough acquires CH-IV, consultants to LNG asset developers, regulators and facility owners, operators and lenders, based in Houston

Clough forms its charitable trust, the Clough Foundation. The Clough Foundation aims to provide support to organisations in local communities in which Clough operates.  

Clough acquires Booth Welsh in Ayrshire, Scotland, a market leader in lifecycle services for control systems, from front end engineering design through to service and replacement.

Clough acquires Canadian EPC - EPCM company, Enercore, and established Clough Enercore in Calgary and Vancouver. 

Clough is awarded the contract for hook-up services on the Ichthys LNG Project Central Processing Facility, the world’s largest semi-submersible platform. 

Peter Bennett is appointed CEO and Managing Director and joins the Murray & Roberts Limited Board in February 2016. Simultaneously, world oil prices fell to their lowest level since 2003; dropping 50 per cent in 2015 alone.  

Clough starts to implement its Major Accident Prevention (MAP) Program on project sites in Australia, to identify, analyse, and eliminate the risk of major accidents. 

Clough AMEC received the ConocoPhillips 2016 Supplier Recognition Award for ‘Doing Business Better’ in recognition of the work undertaken on the Bayu-Undan operations and maintenance contract.

The Karratha Gas Plant Life Extension Integrated Marine Lift Campaign for Woodside is completed and marked the first project for Clough to achieve Zero Harm.  

Clough is awarded the EPC contract to develop POM Power Station near Port Moresby in PNG. POM Power Station uses natural gas supplied by the PNG LNG project to feed six high efficiency reciprocating gas engines and generators. 

Clough re-establishes itself in the mining industry with the award of the Non-Process Infrastructure for the BHP South Flank Project in the Pilbara, Western Australia.  

Clough is awarded additional scopes of work for Rio Tinto’s Oyu Tolgoi mine in Mongolia including design, construction and commissioning of the blind sink and concrete line of Shaft No 3 and No 4 and the construction of the Underground Material Handling System for Stage 1. 

2019 marks 100 years of Clough. This year we celebrate all of our historic achievements and look forward to our future successes. 

Clough acquires Saulsbury's Gulf Coast downstream and chemical business unit and its oil and gas, engineering, procurement and construction portfolio in Houston, Texas. 

Clough AMEC, receives a ConocoPhillips 2018 Supplier Recognition Award for ‘Focus on Execution’. The award recognises the work undertaken on the Bayu-Undan operations and maintenance contract. 

Clough, as part of the Future Generation joint venture, is awarded a AU$5.1bn contract for the Civil and Electro-Mechanical works for the Snowy 2.0 Project.  

Clough is awarded a Petrochemical EPC project, signifying Clough’s first major contract award following the acquisition of the EPC business in USA and the successful establishment of Clough in North America. 

Clough’s first Reconciliation Action Plan is endorsed by Reconciliation Australia, signifying our active engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and the implementation of programs to achieve reconciliation. 

Clough is granted the Employer of Choice for Gender Equality citation for 2019-20 by the Workplace Gender Equality Agency.

Clough Foundation refocuses its pillars to Sustainability, Indigenous Engagement, Diversity, Healthy Communities and Children & Youth 

Clough rebranded of its Canadian business from Clough Enercore to Clough. The Canadian operations will fully integrated into Clough’s established North American business.

Clough is awarded EPC scope for the Waitsia Gas Project Stage 2. Ranked one of the largest gas fields ever discovered onshore in Australia, it is forecasted to bring significant economic benefits to the Mid West region.  

Clough is awarded the EPC scope for Tallawarra Stage B, Australia’s first hydrogen and gas capable power station in Yallah, New South Wales.  

e2o is rebranded expanding its offering to asset services in Australia and launched as a workforce solution business in North America. 

Clough aquires full ownership of JJ White, a general construction contractor based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. 

Webuild, in consortium with Spark, was awarded the North East Link PPP Primary Package in Melbourne. The project involves the design and construction of approximately 6.5 kilometres of twin three‑lane tunnels, together with a range of supporting infrastructure works.

Clough is granted its second Employer of Choice for Gender Equality citation for 2021-23 by the Workplace Gender Equality Agency, recognising Clough’s growing commitments and actions to achieve gender equality. 

Clough’s second Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) is endorsed by Reconciliation Australia for April 2022 – March 2024. 

Webuild, as part of Parklife Metro consortium, was awarded the Stations, Systems, Trains, Operations and Maintenance (SSTOM) contract for Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport. The SSTOM work package includes the delivery of six new stations between St Marys and Bradfield, 12 new metro trains, core rail systems and a stabling and maintenance facility to be built at Orchard Hills.

From February 16, 2023, Webuild acquires 100% of the ownership of Clough in Australia and Papua New Guinea. Clough's international businesses are divested.

Saipem and Clough in an equally shared (50/50) joint venture, are delivering the engineering, procurement of equipment and materials, construction, pre-commissioning and commissioning for Perdaman Industries' Urea Plant Project, a latest-generation fertilizers plant with a capacity of 2.14 million tons of urea per year.

Clough in alliance with the Water Corporation and Jacobs, are delivering the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) for the upgrade of the Woodman Point Sludge Treatment Facilities.

Following the acquisition of Clough by the Webuild Group in February 2023, e2o has also joined the global construction leader as its asset services specialist in Australia.The e2o team has aligned its brand with the Group and expand on its core market offering.

Clough, the Australian subsidiary of Webuild, in joint venture with its partner BMD, have been awarded the Procurement and Construction scope for the development of the Darwin Shiplift Facility by the Northern Territory (NT) Government.

Clough awarded the Design and Construction scope for Pilbara Ports’ new Dampier Bulk Handling Facility (DBHF) at the Port of Dampier, stage one of the overall Dampier Cargo Wharf Projects. 

Clough Wood Joint Venture was awarded a Contract Extension to the existing Bayu-Undan Maintenance Services Agreement by long-standing client, Santos.

Webuild awarded contract to design and construct the new Women and Babies Hospital. Commissioned by the Western Australia Government, the project is destined to replace the century-old King Edward Memorial Hospital and will expand the healthcare services for women, children and their families in the State of West Australia, transforming the capacity of two important healthcare campuses: the Fiona Stanley Hospital complex and the Osborne Park Hospital.

Clough, part of the Webuild Group, has been awarded the Design and Construct (D&C) contract for AGL Energy’s Kwinana Gas Power Generation 2 project (K2), a new 220 MW gas fired power station to be built in Kwinana, south of Perth. K2 will deliver fast start, flexible generation to provide critical backup capacity that supports the increasing penetration of renewable energy across Western Australia.
