Scope of work

Entact Clough was subcontracted by ABB Engineering Construction to undertake three separate contracts for the new Collie Power Station. ABB-PPL also subcontracted Entact Clough to supply and install the heating ventilation and airconditioning to the control and electrical centre.

Control and Electrical Centre
The control and electrical centre project involved the design of the centre to house all switchgear and controls to run the PowerStation. The structure comprised of a reinforced concrete frame with core filled blockwork panels and concrete tilt panels with external metal clad architectural finish. The total area is approximately 5,300m² which includes roof and transformer compounds. The fourth floor of the structure was fitted out to house the control equipment.

Administration and Services Building
The administration building consists of a structural steel frame with blockwork firewalls and conventional office partitioning. A suspended reinforced concrete floor to one third of the ground floor area provides first floor office area. The ground floor provides canteen and ablution facilities for the workforce as well as training and induction facilities. The canteen is equipped with full catering facilities which include a large capacity cold and freezer storage.

Workshop, Water Management Centre, and Gatehouse
The workshop, water management centre and gatehouse are all steel structures using the same construction techniques as the administration building. The water management centre includes an external transformer compound, whilst internally the building houses the switchgear for the transformers, a laboratory and toilet facilities. The gatehouse serves as a twofold function, firstly as a security facility for entry to the power station. Secondly as the main first aid facility with ambulance parking. The single-story structure is approximately 60m², with a large canopy which provides cover for ambulances. The workshop, approximately 1,600m², includes stores, specialist workshops, offices, and ablution facilities. The project involved the provision of exhaust fans for welding bays, the reticulation of compressed air throughout the workshop and installation of two overhead travelling gantry cranes.
