Webuild’s journey in Australia began in the 1970s when it entered the Victorian infrastructure market to build the Melbourne Underground Rail Loop, better known today as the City Loop. This project cemented Webuild’s position as a key player in the major infrastructure market in Australia and unlocked the potential for the business to extend its operations further across the nation. Since then, Victoria has become a long-standing key strategic market for the Group, demonstrated by their commitments to develop their people and support the communities in which they operate.

Over time, Webuild continued to grow and have transformed into a global leader in the design and construction of large, complex projects in the sectors of sustainable mobility, hydropower, water, and green buildings.

Recent projects in Webuild’s experience include the skytrain cable-stayed bridge and viaduct for the Sydney Metro Northwest, and the Forrestfield-Airport Link in Perth, the metro line connecting Sydney to its new airport as well as the Snowy 2.0 hydropower project which it has been delivering in joint venture with Clough since 2019, and Melbourne’s North East Link (NEL) road tunnels, Webuild is also actively participating in tenders for more big infrastructure projects in Victoria.

Marco Assorati, Executive President said: “Together, Webuild and Clough are both better positioned than ever before as leaders in the Australian construction market. With the delivery of the NEL project, we are continuing our growth in Melbourne, which is where Webuild first set its sights in Australia all those years ago. We are excited for this new chapter with Clough and look forward to the continued growth of both businesses as we work together to provide sustainable infrastructure for the people of Victoria whilst making a positive impact in the community.”

Webuild is committed to growing on its corporate social responsibility in Victoria, and has been working closely with universities and community organisations to support education, promote STEM learning, and provide opportunities for scholarships, and graduate and intern programs. This year, Webuild awarded two scholarships to female engineering students studying at the University of Melbourne. It has also been collaborating with the University of Technology Sydney, and recently signed an agreement with the University of Queensland to run a similar program.

Clough became the wholly owned subsidiary of the Webuild Group earlier this year, and with its 104-year project delivery legacy, the addition of the business to the Webuild Group was not only a strategic move of opportune timing, but a major game-changer for both businesses.

Now, working together, Webuild and Clough are combining the innovations, processes, and initiatives of both companies to provide exceptional solutions to their clients and partners, and continue their legacies as employers of choice to over 3,000 people Australia-wide.

As Webuild and Clough continue to grow together and embark on the delivery of some of the biggest and most complex projects in Australia, they share a united purpose to deliver a sustainable future for the business, its people, and the communities in which they operate.

About the North East Link Project

Webuild, as part of the Spark Consortium, was awarded the design and construction contract to deliver the North East Link Primary Package in Melbourne in 2021. The North East Link is the largest private-public partnership for an infrastructure project in Australia, and it has a strong focus on sustainability.

The project involves the construction of twin three-lane tunnels approximately 6.5 kilometres long. Once complete, it will be the longest road tunnel in Victoria, providing an essential link in the city’s freeway network, reducing congestion and travel times for tens of thousands of motorists. The project will enable a more sustainable future by taking 15,000 trucks off local roads every day and reducing trave times by up to 35 minutes for commuters.
