North East Link's tunnel boring machines, Zelda and Gillian, are among the largest in the world, measuring in at a massive 15.61 metres in diameter, over 90 metres in length, and more than 4,000 tonnes!

Their powerful hydraulic cylinders will drive the rotating cutterheads to carve out the 6.5km of tunnels required for the project. TBM Zelda will go as deep as 45 metres to pass under the Yarra River, and after resurfacing near the Lower Plenty Road and Greensborough Road intersection, it will resume its underground journey to reach Bulleen!

About the Project

Webuild, as part of the Spark Joint Venture, is delivering the North East Link tunnels for the Victorian government. The project will enable a more sustainable future by taking 15,000 trucks off local roads every day and reducing travel times by up to 35 minutes for commuters. Once complete, it will be the longest road tunnel in Victoria.
