Scope of work

Clough completed the design and construction contract for a new general cargo wharf and to extend the existing Marlin Jetty at Trinity Inlet, in Cairns Harbour.

The project involved the demolition of part of the existing wharf, and the construction of a new 250 m long structure with 359 No. 800 mm diameter steel piles supporting an in situ concrete deck designed to cater for cargo handling equipment such as mobile cranes, transport vehicles, forklifts and a container crane. The piles were driven from a 45 m x 18 m barge using a fixed leader and hydraulic hammer. A rolling form system was employed to install the 4,500 m³ of concrete decking. In addition, Clough supplied and installed power, water and fuel services and a fender system suitable for vessels ranging from 2,000 to 40,000 dead weight tonnes.

The project also involved the expansion of the existing Marlin Jetty by 100 m to cater for the growing number of recreational and tourist vessels travelling between Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef. The jetty was constructed with an in situ concrete deck placed on precast panels supported by steel piles. It features a wave baffle system designed to protect the adjacent small craft marina during cyclones. A fendering system was supplied and installed along with a small craft pontoon.
