Progress on Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport has reached another significant milestone, with work underway to install the new platforms for the six new metro stations.

Webuild as part of the Parklife Metro Consortium is delivering the Sydney Metro - Western Sydney Airport Metro Line, Stations, Systems, Trains, Operations and Maintenance (SSTOM) Package project.

At the Bradfield Station site, the new metro platforms are already in place, while the large island platform at the Airport Terminal Station site is approximately 50 per cent complete.

The supersized platform at Airport Terminal will be the largest on the line at 95-metres-long by 10-metres-wide, which is double the width of the platforms at Gadigal Station. The extra room will provide plenty of space for passenger movement and accommodate for those travelling with luggage.

The high-precision installation of the platform at Airport Terminal will take about 25 days to complete. A 60-tonne crane is being used to lower 119 precast concrete segments, 25 metres below ground to the station floor. The segments are then pieced together side-by-side and secured in place with bolts and concrete to create the platform.

New metro rail extending between St Marys and Bradfield will become a transport spine for Greater Western Sydney, connecting communities and travellers with the new Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport.

The new 23-kilometre Metro will be able to transport up to 7,740 passengers every hour in each direction, with a fast metro ride from the Airport Terminal to St Marys, where passengers can join services on the T1 Western Line, in just 15 minutes.

The Airport Terminal Station will be one of the busiest on the new metro line. Along with wider platforms, it will feature larger lifts, and more widely spaced ticket gates to ensure smooth passenger flow. A three-minute covered walk will link the station to the airport terminal.

Platform installation will start next at Airport Business Park and Orchard Hills stations.

Across all station sites work continues with concreting, steelwork, and formwork underway as the main station structures begin to take shape. Track laying is also underway at multiple locations.

Recently the project reached its anticipated peak construction workforce of 14,000, with 3,000 workers currently on-site delivering the project.

Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport is jointly funded by the Australian and NSW governments.

City-shaping metro rail will establish a crucial public transport link in Sydney’s greater west, supporting opportunities for housing growth and paving the way for potential future rail extensions.

“The metro platforms at the Airport Terminal will be among the busiest on the line and will play a vital role in moving the high volume of passengers visiting Sydney’s new international airport.

“A peak construction workforce of 14,000 workers has, in just over 2.5 years, driven rapid progress right across this mega project to bring world-class metro to Sydney’s growing greater west.

“Sydney Metro is much more than a rail project, it is a jobs juggernaut – particularly for people in this state, with more than half of the project team New South Wales locals.
