The Clough Foundation is pleased to announce it has renewed its partnership with MATES in Construction (MATES), for the third year in a row demonstrating Clough’s commitment to improving mental health outcomes in the construction industry.

MATES provides mental health and suicide prevention education and training through development programs on sites, and by supporting workers in need through case management and a 24/7 help line.

Industry research shows that construction workers are six times more likely to die from suicide than an accident at work, and young construction workers are more likely to take their own lives than other young Australians.

Clough is committed to being a part of the change that’s needed in the industry’s approach to mental health and suicide prevention to make a difference to these harrowing statistics.

Peter Bennett, Clough CEO and Clough Foundation Director said: “Since the Clough Foundation began its partnership with Mates in Construction in 2020, Clough has implemented the recommendations from the Blueprint for Better Mental Health across all our projects globally, and one of the key outcomes has been the delivery of mental health and suicide prevention education and training for our supervisors and workforce. These programs are helping change the narrative and remove the stigma associated with talking about mental health. By encouraging our people to share their knowledge and support one another, we can make a difference in our communities.”

MATES serves the construction industry in Queensland, New South Wales, South Australia and Western Australia, the energy industry in Queensland and New South Wales, and nationally the mining industry. Working for the construction industry in general, MATES programs are delivered across the industry and are independent of employers or union affiliation and never work directly for an employer.
