The Spark North East Link Tunnels D&C team has reached another significant milestone with the successful installation of 1,000 culverts in the tunnels excavated by Tunnel Boring Machines Gillian and Zelda (TBMs).

A total of 4,425 culverts are being manufactured for the project by Humes at their Echuca facility. Measuring 3.5m high by 4.1m wide and weighing in at 19 tonnes each, these massive structures are delivered daily - with 14 to 26 culverts transported from Echuca to Watsonia for installation.

Once complete, the culverts will form a service tunnel beneath the road surface, allowing safe access for maintenance crews when the tunnels open to traffic in 2028.
