Scope of work

Clough’s Jakarta-based subsidiary, PT Petrosea* in a joint venture with PT Ballast Indonesia and PT Decorient completed a contract for the design, procurement and construction of a service wharf and associated facilities for Kaltim Prima Coal at their Tanjung Bara Coal Terminal at Sangatta, a remote area on the east coast of the island of Borneo.

The project involved the construction of the main wharf structure which consisted of a 90 m long by 20 m wide concrete deck plus two 45 m long
by 15 m wide access bridges all supported on 914 mm diameter tubular steel piles. The wharf was designed to accommodate barges and small coastal ships with draughts of up to 4.5 m at all tides.

The project also involved the delivery of the wharf's connecting systems, consisting of a 1,100 m long earthfill, rockarmoured causeway incorporating a 90 m by 70 m storage area at the seaward end. It was constructed by raising, widening and extending the length of an existing causeway.

The project also involved in the contract were the design, supply and construction of a 60 m long timber deck on timber pile small craft berth, a 20 m wide concrete landing craft ramp, a two storey port operations building complete with all services, a gatehouse building and the design, supply, installation and commissioning of the fire fighting system and flood lighting system for the wharf and storage area.
