Clough has for over 100 years been recognised as a pioneer of the construction and engineering sector, and since 1972 has been contributing to the community through the establishment of the Clough Scholarships.

Launched by Harold Clough to give back to the University of WA where he graduated in 1947, it has since seen hundreds of young people benefit across a wide range of disciplines including civil, construction management, mechanical, mechatronic, electrical, process, environmental and ocean engineering.

Meet one of this year’s scholars, Siena Fielke!

“I have always been captivated and interested in how the world around me functions and evolves. It is clear to me that this functionality and survival of the planet continuously returns to nature and extends itself to significantly impacting us as individuals both cognitively and physically. My love for aesthetically appealing, efficient design and creative problem solving fuelled my interest in building and construction. Together with my passion for the environment, a career in STEM intrigues me as it holds immense potential in engineering and construction for unique design innovation and change regarding environmental preservation and protection.

The strong work culture that Clough has established has made my start extremely welcoming and supportive. The internship ensures there is a strong mentor program between myself and a current Clough employee that has undergone a similar entry process into the industry. This has provided me with positive and influential guidance into the business to guarantee I get the most out of the program. Clough’s vision for providing a hands-on experience for all stages of a range of current projects during our time is unique and impressive. The internship structure allows me to move around areas and disciplines within the business to develop a wider range of knowledge as to how engineering companies function as a whole.

Society and its needs are constantly evolving and changing, so I am excited to be a part of these projects and see future ideas and solutions come to life. Being an active dynamic drive surrounded by a team in which each member is aligned with the same values of not only completing a project but doing so in a way that will have a positive contribution to the world around us motivates me and assures me of a positive career as a future engineer.

During my internship I hope to gain site experience through a number of Clough’s projects to better understand the whole process of engineering and construction jobs. Clough’s ability to execute all phases of an EPC project means that it is possible to see ideas come to life and in their final stage of execution, so I am hoping to increase my knowledge and understanding on all stages of EPC projects. I also hope to learn about the roles and responsibilities within HSSE specifically in the Environmental Department regarding sustainability and how engineering and construction companies can work to reduce and eliminate as much environmental harm as possible.  I am confident that these experiences and lessons from my Clough internship will help build the foundation to a successful career in making a positive impact socially, economically and environmentally as a future engineer.”
