Clough, part of the Webuild Group, has been awarded the Design and Construct (D&C) contract for AGL Energy’s Kwinana Gas Power Generation 2 project (K2), a new 220 MW gas‑fired power station to be built in Kwinana, south of Perth.

K2 will deliver fast start, flexible generation to provide critical backup capacity that supports the increasing penetration of renewable energy across Western Australia. The facility will strengthen AGL’s energy portfolio in the state and aligns with the Western Australian Government’s commitment to retire all state owned coalfired power generation by 2030.

The project will supply power during periods of peak demand, providing a lower emission alternative within the state’s evolving energy mix.

At peak construction, the project is expected to employ more than 200 people, contributing to local jobs, supply chain and capability within the region.

Marco Assorati, Webuild Senior Executive Vice President of Operations and Executive President for Clough, said: “We are pleased to be awarded this important project, which supports Australia’s transition to renewable energy sources such as hydro, and emerging firming and storage technologies. K2 strengthens Western Australia’s energy system and reinforces Clough’s commitment to delivering essential infrastructure that contributes to a more sustainable and secure energy future.”

Clough in collaboration with e2o, also part of Webuild group, looks forward to working closely with AGL Energy and project stakeholders to safely and successfully deliver this significant energy infrastructure asset for Western Australia.
