The Role:

Provide senior technical and design leadership across Clough's Buildings portfolio, supporting projects from precontracts and bid development through design, procurement and delivery. Lead and coordinate multidisciplinary internal and external design teams, establish robust technical governance, and provide trusted client-facing leadership to deliver safe, compliant, buildable and commercially informed design outcomes. The role will support a diverse portfolio of complex building projects and strengthen organisational capability across sectors including aviation, health, defence, stadia and data centres. 

The Duties:

• Provide senior technical and design leadership across complex building projects and pursuits, with flexibility to support multiple sectors and project locations as business priorities require.
• Lead multidisciplinary design management across architecture, structures, building services/MEP, civil interfaces and specialist disciplines, ensuring integration between design, construction, commercial, planning and procurement requirements.
• Support projects across the full lifecycle, including opportunity development, precontracts, tendering, design development, procurement, construction, commissioning and handover, with particular focus on continuity of design intent and technical risk management.
• Lead engineering and design contributions to bids and business development, including technical strategy, design partner selection, consultant scopes, programme, resourcing, design risk, value management and client presentations.
• Establish and maintain appropriate technical governance, assurance, peer review and audit processes so that designs are compliant, coordinated, buildable and suitable for the intended procurement and delivery strategy.
• Act as a trusted technical interface with clients, authorities, operators, consultants, delivery partners and internal leadership, translating complex technical matters into clear narratives, recommendations and decisions.
• Facilitate and lead client and stakeholder workshops, design reviews and presentations, demonstrating strong judgement, communication and the ability to build confidence in the project's technical approach.
• Manage external designers and consultants, including scope definition, procurement support, deliverables, programme, performance, design change, coordination and commercial awareness.
• Ensure engineering and design teams are clearly briefed on scope, contractual obligations, design responsibilities, programme, interfaces, information requirements and change control.
• Drive design integration with construction methodology, temporary works, logistics, procurement packaging, quantities, cost planning, value management and programme to optimise whole-of-project outcomes.
• Identify, escalate and actively manage technical, design and interface risks, including gaps between disciplines, packages and project phases, and ensure clear ownership and close-out.
• Support the allocation and development of Engineering Managers, Design Managers, Engineering Coordinators and discipline resources across the Buildings portfolio, balancing project demand and capability.
• Build capability within the Buildings engineering function through mentoring, coaching, graduate development, knowledge sharing, lessons learned and targeted professional development.
• Identify capability gaps and emerging technical requirements across the Buildings portfolio and recommend recruitment, external support, systems or training to strengthen organisational capability.
• Foster collaborative behaviours across engineering, design, commercial, construction and operations teams and promote productive partnerships with external designers and supply chain participants.
• Demonstrate and promote Clough's Code of Conduct, Principles and Values and comply with applicable Clough Management System requirements.

The Requirements:

• Relevant tertiary qualifications (e.g. BSc Eng).
• Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) – preferred.
• Membership of relevant Engineering Institutions (e.g. Engineers Australia) – preferred
• 15+ years' relevant experience in engineering, design or technical management, including substantial experience on complex building projects.
• Demonstrated experience across a combination of building sectors such as aviation, health, defence, stadia, data centres or other technically complex major buildings; depth in several sectors is preferred over experience in every sector.
• Strong contractor-side experience is highly desirable. Experience gained across more than one part of the industry - contractor, client and/or design consultancy - will be well regarded, particularly where it demonstrates an understanding of differing project drivers and responsibilities.
• Demonstrated experience across both precontracts and project delivery, with the ability to transition technical strategy from bid and design development into procurement, construction and commissioning.
• Proven multidisciplinary leadership across building design, with experience coordinating architecture, structures, MEP/building services and specialist systems rather than experience limited to a single discipline.
• Minimum 5+ years' experience leading engineering/design teams, consultants or multidisciplinary technical functions on major projects.
• Strong client, stakeholder and delivery-partner management skills, including the ability to establish trust, facilitate difficult technical discussions and influence outcomes without relying solely on formal authority.
• Highly developed written and verbal communication skills, with demonstrated ability to present a coherent technical narrative to clients, executives, project teams and non-technical stakeholders.

• Sound commercial and contractual awareness, including consultant scopes, design change, procurement interfaces, programme, quantities, value management and technical risk.
