Today is World Suicide Prevention Day, which coincides with R U OK? Day. Together, these important awareness days serve as a powerful reminder to pause, reflect on our own wellbeing, check in with those around us, and help break down the stigma that can still surround conversations about mental health.

The statistics about mental health remain confronting. In Australia, suicide is still one of the leading causes of death among people aged 15 to 44. Each year, more than 3,000 Australians lose their lives to suicide. These sobering statistics that reinforces the importance of speaking openly about mental health and encouraging people to seek support when they need it.

To recognise the day, our teams took part in R U OK? Training, participated in an R U OK? Day quiz at QV1, listened to colleagues’ stories about how conversations helped their mental health, and learned about the four steps to having an R U OK? Conversation. The team at Snowy 2.0 also welcomed NRL and Rugby Union legend Mat Rogers to the project where he shared the importance of looking out for those around us.
